Repairs and Replacements That Can Be Done in Cold Weather

roof repair

If you have a damaged roof, waiting to get it fixed can make a minor problem turn into a major inconvenience.

The winter season certainly limits what a roofing company can do to your roof, but there are still some possible repairs methods, even in cold weather.

Read on to learn more about when to repair your roof and what kinds of winter roof repairs are available in the winter.

When to Repair Your Roof

While winter is not the ideal time to get your roof repaired, it is more than possible to do.

Winter can bring more adverse weather conditions, which decreases the roof’s safety for workers. Plus, the materials and equipment used by roofers often have temperature or other weather requirements.

Asphalt shingles tend to be more prone to breaking when the temperature is below 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, thermal sealing for new shingles is best done in temperatures over 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is too cold, it becomes more difficult to soften the adhesive and make sure it sufficiently bonds the shingles.

Because of how difficult and unsafe it can be to do roof repair in the winter, it is recommended to hire roofers during the fall instead, if possible.

However, if you have a damaged roof, you probably don’t have time to wait for warmer weather. The longer you wait to do your roof repair, the worse the damage will be.

This is especially true of roof replacements. If a roofer recommends a full roof replacement in the winter, this means that your roof has a significant problem that cannot wait.

Types of Winter Roof Repair

The most common type of winter roof repair is fixing broken or missing shingles. Shingles can be damaged by many weather conditions that tend to come with the winter months, including:

  • Wind
  • Snow and ice accumulation
  • The freeze-thaw cycle

Missing or broken shingles can allow water to seep into your house when it rains or snows. This can damage the drywall, ceiling, and other areas of your house.

In colder temperatures, a caulking process is used to ensure the shingles keep moisture out and adhere to the roof in cold weather. Once the temperature warms up, the shingles will start the self-adhering process. If they were installed correctly, this process will strengthen the shingles’ bond.

Other common repairs in the winter include damaged gutters, chimneys, and vents. These can be caused by ice, the freeze-thaw cycle, or high winds, depending on the type of damage.

Repairing Your Roof in the Winter

While winter is not the ideal time for roof repair or replacement, a broken roof cannot wait.

Damage to your roof will often get worse without prompt roof repair, but this is not an easy job in cold temperatures. If you don’t hire the right roofers for the job, it can have consequences.

How Much Does a Shake Roof Cost?

shake roofing

Did you know that the price of a shake roof on average can range between $11,000 and $18,000? Thankfully all roofs are different and they’re all based on certain things. This price could be more or less as it will depend on things like the square footage, materials, and if your home is a standard size.

Don’t forget, no one likes to be upsold on things that they don’t need or to overpay for the things that they do. If you’re not sure where to start, that’s ok, that’s why you ask the professionals.

You want to elude the issue of overspending so it’s important to get a proper estimate. You will want to work with a contractor that will provide you with extensive details on what needs repaired, removed, or replaced.

Keep reading to have all of your shake roof questions answered and to receive information on how to get started with your next home project.

What Is A Shake Roof and How Does A Shake Differ From A Shingle?

What exactly is a shake? Well, generally you’ll take a log, hand-split a piece of wood from that log, and shape it into a block. So, in simpler terms, a shake is just a wooden shear that is typically made from a split log. The difference between both is in appearance.

Shakes are generally thicker than a shingle would be and they also match the grain of wood more closely than a shingle would.

If you have a shake in one hand, you might notice that the surface is pretty uneven and if you have a shingle in the other hand, you may notice that the surface is noticeably smooth.

How To Get A Quote For Your Shake Roof

A new roof can be quite costly and that’s why you want to work with first-rate contractors. With the roof guys, you will have the option to take advantage of free inspections, quotes, and financing options.

Is A Shake Roof What My Home Needs?

If you’re interested in the look of a shake roof you may find it helpful to know that with the proper maintenance and installation a shake roof can last about 30 years.  If you initially invest in high-quality materials you could even extend the life of your roof by 20 more years.

You’ll want to start out by scheduling a maintenance check for your roof at least every five years. If this is going to be a brand new roof you would benefit from having a professional review the previous job assess what you will need.

You can determine the type of roof that you need by assessing the type of area that you live in and by what you want to get out of it. Shake roofing is often resistant to insects and other elements such as the wind and snow.

Here’s something that you may find interesting; cedar roofing adds value to homes and appeals to future home buyers should you decide to sell. So, if you have a cedar roof installed, not only are there multiple options to choose from but your potential listing would appeal to new buyers.

Roof Repair vs. Roof Replacement

Roof Repair vs. Roof Replacement

house roof damaged in hurricane storm

Anyone can see that you have roofing problems. But should you call for roof repair or roof replacement?

On the one hand, roof replacement will completely solve all of your roofing issues. On the other hand, it’s a huge waste of money for any roof damage that can be easily and effectively repaired.

So what do you do? You’ll find out in the guide below.

This list covers all of the most common roof issues, including leaks, impact damage, and old age. And, point-by-point, we’ll tell you which service your particular problem requires. If you need professional help with your roofing in MN, read this guide first.

When to Get Roof Repair

As a general rule, you always want to repair your roof if possible. The only time this isn’t effective is when the damage is so extensive that repairs will not fully solve the problem. In any case, here are some examples of problems that can still be fixed.

Your Roof Is New

Typically, a new roof will last at least 15 years. If your roof is relatively new, replacement probably isn’t necessary.

However, this is another general rule. In rare cases of extreme damage, roof replacement may be required.

The Damage Is Small

If a tree branch falls and dents your roof, the damage can usually be repaired. When incidents like this happen, the damage usually affects only one small area of the roof. As long as the damage can be patched up without threatening the structural integrity of your house, there’s no sense in tearing out all the undamaged parts of your roof.

When to Get Roof Replacement

Now, here are some situations in which you’ll waste more money on repairs. In the following examples, roof replacement is the only cost-effective solution.

Very Large Areas of Damage

Now, let’s imagine that a fallen tree branch has caused half of your roof to cave in. In this situation, it’s likely that your roof needs extensive reconstruction, along with some of the walls.

Many Damaged Spots

In other situations, there may be damage in several spots all across your roof. This can be from pests or hailstorms, for instance. In very rainy areas, small leaks develop in not one but many different areas of your roof.

When there are just too many damaged spots, the overall integrity of your roof is compromised. Thus, roof replacement is the only way to save the rest of the house.

Your Roof Is Too Old

When the damage seems minor, it’s still a good idea to recall how old the roof is. There comes a time when the roof is simply too worn out to keep repairing.

Find out the life expectancy of your particular roof type. If it’s getting too old, replace it.

When Should I Replace My Roof?

When Should I Replace My Roof?

The roof over your home, depending on what material it’s made out of, will only last 25 to 30 years.
That isn’t counting on damage brought on by severe weather, climate events, or wind. When something does happen to your roof, roofing repair is often the best solution to the problem.

Having a solid and functional roof is essential to protecting your home and family. A damaged roof can let in water, which leads to rot or other structural damage. Failing to repair a roof can lead to expensive repairs or even the loss of a home. Don’t let this happen to you.

Roofing Repair

So how do you know when you need to repair or replace the roof on your home? The first and the best thing you can do is to check the rooftop after every major weather event, or even after periods of heavier than usual wind. Finding out quickly that you have storm damage is important. The sooner you know you have damage and can address it, the less likely it will spiral into catastrophic repair costs.

The most common type of damage to a roof is displaced or missing shingles. These can be blown away by the wind, cracked and shattered by hail, or knocked out of place. If you notice missing shingles on your roof, emergency roof repair is the best option for you.

If the damage is confined to a small area, and the rest of the shingles look good, this may be all that you have to do. However, if your roof is old, and you notice that such damage occurs frequently, it is probably time to consider getting an entirely new roof.

The Power of Nature

Another sign to look for when determining whether not you need repairs is moss. Moss often grows due to trapped moisture in the roof, which feeds it and allows the moss to grow. The more moss that you see, the more likely it is that you have a leaky roof that needs immediate attention.
Speaking of damage and attention, if a roof is leaking, make sure to get it taken care of right away. Damage caused by leaking roofs can be substantial. If you see water dripping, or gathering on the walls and ceiling, that means you need repairs now.

Your Roof, Your Home

In many ways, the quality of the roof will determine how nice your home is. Damage over time from moisture leaking or even loss of insulation and inflated costs are all symptoms of a damaged roof. If you notice any discoloration, missing shingles, or moss, get help as soon as possible.
For those of you who are in the twin cities area, The Roof Guys are here to help. We can make sure that your roof is installed the right way and functioning as you need. Whether it is a commercial, residential roof, or an emergency repair, The Roof Guys can make sure that you get the roofing repair service that you need.

How Does a Roof Restoration Add Value to Your Home?

How Does a Roof Restoration Add Value To Your Home?

roof shingles

Your home is one of the most important investments you’ll ever make. Your house provides you and your family comfort, shelter, and a place to gather with friends and family. It’s where memories are made.

You don’t want to ignore keeping your home in excellent condition, and that includes the roof. You should know that roof replacement and roof repair, adds value to your home, as well as protecting it and you from the elements.

Whether you’re planning on buying or selling a home, you should consider some form of a roof restoration, either to increase your selling price or to increase the value of your investment. Let’s take a closer look at why.

Financial Gain

One of the first questions a potential home buyer will ask is how old the roof is? The age of your roof will impact a buyer’s decision and offer price regardless of the roof’s condition.
Buyers look at it as an expense they will incur at some point. If your roof is older than 15 years, you can expect a buyer to negotiate down based on this fact alone.

House flippers look for a property that they can fix-up. Remodeling the inside is a popular way to build equity, but the roof offers more investment return than a new bathroom or kitchen, and house flippers know this.

First-time buyers should take this cue from house-flippers and hire a roof repair service. You’ll want the protection a new roof offers, plus the added value to your investment.

Curb Appeal

An older house looks old if it hasn’t been adequately maintained. Many homeowners will look to paint the house first. While this will make the house look better from the curb, it doesn’t add any real value.

Hiring a roof restoration service to repair or replace your roof will immediately add significant value to your home, perhaps as much as $20,000 or more. A new roof not only makes the house look better, but it will appraise for more money, and buyers will consider the roof as a plus to buying.

Energy Efficiency

Roof restoration or roof replacement will increase the lifespan of your roof. It can also help you lower your monthly utility bills. One way to achieve this is to use energy-efficient shingles.
In warm weather, energy-efficient shingles can reflect sunlight rather than absorb it. This reflection process will reduce heat buildup in your attic, which in turn reduces your cost to cool your home. In colder weather, a new roof will help keep the heat from escaping.
Who wouldn’t want to lower their heating and air conditioning bills? When you replace your roof, you can market your energy-efficient home as an added value to potential buyers.

Roof Replacement, Roof Repair, Adds Value

Taking care of your house is a priority for nearly everyone, but too often, people overlook the roof. Maybe that’s because you never get a close-up look at your roof. Whether you plan on selling or just bought your home, take a moment and look at your roof.

Now that you understand how roof replacement, roof repair, adds value to your home you should contact The Roof Guys today for a free inspection and quote. Our team has decades of experience repairing, restoring, and replacing roofs of all types and will happily answer all your questions.

A new roof is just a click away.

The Roof Guys: Your Home Roof Inspection

The Weathered Roof

With the most recent onslaught of rain, wind, and lightning, the home has once again been exposed to some tough weather that has continued to wear and tear the roofs durability down. As a homeowner, maintaining the various parts of the home can be daunting and difficult. When it comes to assessing your roof in particular, there are really only a few signs you will be able to identify, and sometimes your inspection may not be enough to catch the full damage.

Inspecting the home before calling the professionals

Often times, roof inspection through simple measures can be a great way to understand if your roof is holding its own against the weather. However, as the roof continues to get hit by the elements, some signs can occur and be difficult to see. If you don’t know what you are looking, for then those missed signs could become big problems.

Your Roof Inspection

Below are some simple signs you can look for when it comes to self inspecting your home. These simple signs will help you decide if you need to contact professionals for a further, in-depth roof inspection:

  • Missing or flapping shingles.
  • Lifting or unevenness around the corners or edges of the roof.
  • Ceilings, walls, and attics on the inside of the home showing signs of water damage.
  • Water spots.
  • Damp areas along walls or carpet.
  • Pooling water or moisture in the attic.
  • Roof leaks or light shining in from the outside.
  • Cracks,chips, or mold.
  • Residual components brought down the storm drain with the rain.
  • Homes in your area of similar age replacing their roofs.

If your roof is relatively new (less than 5 years old), and shows no signs of interior leaks or other aforementioned signs, then you can probably get away with a visual inspection right now. However, after each storm you will want to do another visual inspection to ensure nothing has changed.

The Roof Guys: Your Roof and Hail Damage

Roof Damage from hail

The Roof Guys: Your Roof and Hail Damage

Roofs, much like everything else in a home, will need time, attention, and maintenance. This is especially true when you have had some recent hail in the area and your roof took a beating. In the United States alone, hail and high-speed winds have been known to cause around $15 billion in damages. This $15 billion would account for near 40% of insurance claims and lead to hundreds of damaged homes.  Not to mention, during a hailstorm, your roof is only one of the many parts of the home taking potential damage, that may be in need of repair or servicing.

So what do you need to do to assess the degree of damage from hail? The Roof Guys have the answers!

First, let us determine what your roof can and cannot handle when it comes to hail size. Most all sizes of hail can produce some wear and tear on your roof, but some smaller bits of hail have minimal effects and don’t need to be worried about as much.

  • 1”(the size of a quarter) Hail will have little to no exterior damage to the roof and house, but will affect your plants most of all.
  • 25” (the size of a half-dollar) Hail will bring with it minor damage to most roofs and potentially some cracks in siding of the house.
  • 5” (the size of a walnut) Hail will result in severe roof damage along with dents in wood.
  • 75” (the size of a golf ball) Hail will certainly result in exterior paint damage, and if your car is outside, dents.
  • 5” (the size of a tennis ball) Hail will be, well, catastrophic. This hail will break windows, damage crops, and without a doubt need you to have someone (like the Roof Guys!) assess your roofs integrity.

The Effects of Hail Damage to a Roof

Hail is hard hitting and hits the home from most all sides. However, the damage can vary depending on wind speed, the direction of the wind, the roofs main material, age of the material, and slope of the roof. The results of these factors can lead to leaking roofs, which is the main fear, but also other forms of damage and loss of protection.

  • Granule Loss– the sandpaper-like texture that is a part of the shingles will be reduced or missing, allowing the elements to accelerate the aging against the asphalt coating. You can check this by looking at your gutters and downspouts after a hailstorm to see if there are granules that have washed down.
  • Cracks in the Shingles– High impact hail with a high density can grip the shingles on a roof and cause cracks in the fall, which will cause tears and leave bare spots. Cracked shingles and bare spots offer no protection from the elements.
  • Exposed Fiberglass mat– Hail can shatter the shingles, causing them to break away from fiberglass mat underneath, and cause litter on your lawn while also causing your roof to be devoid of protection.
  • Fractured Fiberglass mat– Fractured fiberglass can result from points of impact from hail, and are often hard to discern, making them pesky problems.
  • Weakened self-seal strip-Hard-hitting hail and high winds can weaken the seal integrity of your shingles, causing the shingles to blow off and leave your roof utterly exposed. Once a shingle is damage, it is permanently out of commission, leading to leaks and potentially letting other shingles get damaged more easily.

Who Do You Call? The Roof Guys!

Naturally, none of these situations sound ideal or comfortable. Which means you will want to keep an eye on the weather and the elements being tossed around on your roof. However, understanding your roofs condition and being able to see the damage takes trained eyes and experience, which is where we come in!

Give us a call at The Roof Guys MN today! Let us assess your homes safety under your roof, and help ensure you and your family are well protected from the ever surprising Minnesota weather!
